Ecuador is generally a safe place for surfers to visit. Located on the northern Pacific coastline of South America, Ecuador is an up and coming surf destination with a variety of surf breaks and a general lack of crowds at most surf spots. There are some world class surf spots in Ecuador, especially in the Galapagos Islands.
The Galapagos Islands is an archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean 960 km west of Ecuador. They are part of the Republic of Ecuador and a place you must see if visiting the country. This is the place where Charles Darwin formulated his Theory of Evolution based on the specialization of fauna that he witnessed on each island. The Galapagos Islands are quickly becoming a must visit surf travel destination due to the world class waves found here.
The best waves in The Galapagos Islands are located in and around Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of the Galápagos Province. It is located along the southwestern coast of San Cristóbal, the easternmost island in the archipelago. Due to its location, San Cristóbal Island has super consistent surf and rarely goes flat.
Loberia is the heaviest wave on the island. It is a lava reef that breaks both directions. There are two good lefts that wrap around the southwestern corner of San Cristóbal Island, Tongo Reef and El Cañon. But, Playa Carola is the best wave on the island. Playa Carola is a world class right reef that breaks in front of the lighthouse.
Most of the good surf spots on the mainland are located between Manta and Guyaquil as this area tends to pick up the consistent southern swells much better than in the north. The area around Salinas has some really good waves especially the left point at Shit Bay.
Further south, the area around Playas, known as Shark Bay has several right point breaks around the headland from El Pelado to the beaches in Playas.
