Puerto Rico is a prime surfing destination for East Coast surfers, due to its proximity to Florida and the waves that can be found there.
The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States of America and has been often referred to as the 51st state. Located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, between Dominican Republic and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is the smallest island in the Greater Antilles archipelago.
Surfing in Puerto Rico is focused on the north shore, which picks up swells produced by storm systems in the North Atlantic that often bypass much of the East Coast. The wave rich region known as Rincon, has some of the best surf you can find in Puerto Rico. Rincon is home to Gas Chambers, a shallow reef break that has been compared to waves found on the North Shore of Oahu.
Gas Chambers is a heaving right that barrels over a shallow coral reef and is a wave for experts only! Gas Chamber isn’t the only wave in Puerto Rico, but it is definitely the premier surf break, and one not to be missed when its on.
The Rincon area has some lesser known surf spots that get really good. Be careful, as most of these surf spot are heavily localized and Puerto Rican surfers are very territorial. Show respect for the locals and the waves and you shouldn’t have any problems.
